Mercedes previewed the interior of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan that will go on sale later this year as a 2024 model.
The latest generation of premium mid-size sedans will follow current trends by introducing digital features that go far beyond enhancing the driving experience. By focusing more on the software rather than the hardware installed in the cabin, it is possible that updates will be added more frequently in the future.
According to the specs, up to three screens will take up space on the dashboard: one for the instrument cluster, another for the infotainment center, and a third and final screen facing the front passengers. The content displayed on the screen is generated by the vehicle’s operating system as well as the MBUX infotainment system. However, third-party applications can also be installed. Mercedes cited TikTok, Angry Birds and the web browser Vivaldi as examples.
The dash-mounted camera will also allow the driver and front passenger to take part in Zoom conference calls or take selfies when the car is stationary. An available Zync Entertainment Portal will also enable video streaming, on-demand content and some interactive experiences.

For audiophiles, Mercedes will offer a Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos technology. Occupants will not only be able to hear sound through the resonant transducers, but also enjoy visual cues through the active ambient lighting package. A song with a fast beat sequence will cause rapid light changes, while a flowing rhythm will cause light changes that blend gently.
Mercedes will also offer a relaxation system called Energizing Comfort. The system alters the mood of the occupants through soothing sounds, specific light sequences, and massage and heating functions.
AI systems are also being developed to be able to understand which functions in the car are being reused, so these functions can be automated to a certain extent. For example, if the owner does a regular workout on Thursday nights and then uses the massage function on the way home, the car can learn the routine. While this feature won’t be available at launch, Mercedes says owners will be able to program some. An example might be a routine for climate settings, such as a ‘warm up’ program where a specific temperature is set and the seat and steering heaters are turned on.
While the interior of the new E-Class is taking a whole new direction, camouflaged prototypes suggest the exterior is heading in a more evolutionary direction. A redesigned E-Class wagon is also in the works, available in both regular and all-terrain versions. Don’t look for another generation two-door E-Class variant, though. Mercedes is preparing a new CLE-Class to replace the C-Class and E-Class coupe and convertible models. It should be unveiled at the same time as the new E-Class.
