The latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class has a plug-in hybrid variant.
It’s called the S 580e, and Mercedes announced Monday that the electric luxury sedan will arrive in dealerships in the first half of 2023 as a 2023 model.
Orders are already open, with pricing confirmed starting at $123,700, including $1,150 for destination delivery.
The S 580e’s powertrain consists of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine coupled with a single electric motor that sends drive to all four wheels. Combined output is a healthy 510 horsepower, or enough for 0-60 mph acceleration in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The Maybach S 580e that will be offered overseas has the same powertrain.

As a plug-in hybrid, electric-only range is possible, though output in this mode is limited to 148 horsepower. The car packs a 21.5-kilowatt-hour battery, which Mercedes says provides 62 miles of range on the WLTP cycle used overseas. A tighter EPA cycle will result in a lower range. According to Mercedes, the battery can be charged 10-80 percent in about 20 minutes using a DC fast charger.
The S 580e isn’t the only plug-in hybrid variant of the latest S-Class. The 2023 model year also saw the arrival of the AMG S 63 E Performance. The performance sedan features a twin-turbocharged V-8 with an electric motor up front and a second electric motor in the rear for a total of 791 horsepower from all powerplants. Pricing for the model will be announced closer to availability later this year.
