Tokyo Auto Salon: The Big, The Small & The Bizarre

When most people think of TAS, they usually think of the big name Japanese tuners. However, these cars actually make up only a small fraction of what the Tokyo Auto Salon has to offer.

The 2023 events are no exception, so I thought I’d check out some of them other The vehicles on display this year, I’ve broken down into three distinct categories: big, small, and exotic.

Big

On this show, you can see everything from giant off-road vehicles to small city cars. The “big” category really sells big in the ubiquitous dream, though even with the 8-inch lift, I’d expect this to be an AWD version of the popular Toyota Alphard.

small

There were many little magicians on display at TAS 2023, but two particularly “little” concepts stood out. The first is a track day inspired pairing from Daihatsu.

The idea is that people can swing by a track anywhere in the country, extend the rear of their Hijet mini truck, and have a cozy place to nap after hours of bumping around the track in their Copen.

Basically camping for petrol heads.

The next product, this time from Nissan, is aimed at a slightly different demographic.

The concept here is to enjoy the peace and quiet on a trip to the vineyard, where you might feel the urge to serenade your wedding with your Nissan Leaf’s batteries. or similar provisions.

In the cabin, Nissan has adopted a special honeycomb fabric, which greatly reduces the transmission of external noise to passengers.

Strange

Ok, so beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, but using a bit of poetic license, my “bizarre” category consists of all things that are just a little bit there.

These cars do nothing but shock. Intense paint jobs, bespoke interiors, questionable body kits and piles of bling – these are all part of the wonderful tapestry of cars on display at TAS.
