On New Year’s Eve 2022, footage of a spectator was killed by a car at the Dato’ Sagor Circuit in Pasir Salak, Perak, during the CCT Championship, with footage of the incident widely circulated on social media.

In the video, the two cars chase before colliding, forcing one of them off the track and into a group of people standing in a clearing. The car then hit the 32-year-old workshop mechanic, who was taken to Changkat Melintang Hospital where he died at around 5pm.

According to race coordinator Yano Al-Mahadzir, 10 law enforcement officers were placed on six sections around the track during the race and were told to ensure that the area where the incident took place was free of spectators.

“However, on the last lap, they went from the middle of the track to the area around the track,” he said with Berita HarianYano added that this was the first fatal accident in the almost 10 years since his company (Yano Auto Parts & Accessories) managed the racing at Dato’ Sagor Circuit.

After the incident, the Perak state government stated that it would investigate the full report of the organizers, Bernama reports. Khairuddin Abu Hanipa, chairman of the state education, higher education, youth and sports committee, said: “On behalf of the state government, I would like to express my condolences to the families of the victims. We are very sorry about this incident.”

He added: “I will announce the next course of action after I have read the full report including the technical aspects of the local authorities, spectator and racer safety, duty officers, etc.”
